Although we worked on this last class, today was possibly more of a challenge. The problem was not, not understanding how to write the formula or use the program, but not knowing what my story should be. I started off with an idea I had for a moment, and when typed out, thats what it was - a moment. It was disengaging and boring and after my critique, I decided to start from scratch. Unfortunately this led to writers block. After quite sometime, I decided to try and write something light. I realized that subconsciously when trying to come up with a screenplay, I tried to think of something overly clever or with too much meaning. As a student my goal isn't to come up with a film about life but something to capture the attention of the audience so they don't fall asleep. All in all, I am happier with the second idea, although I didn't have time to get feedback from Ms. Rosati.

Tue, 13 Sep 2011 05:58:00 -0700 Time To Write A Horror Film http://myposterous-yjlc.posterous.com/time-to-write-a-horror-film http://myposterous-yjlc.posterous.com/time-to-write-a-horror-film

During today's lesson we worked on screenplay writing. As a class we chose to write a horror film because we all seemed to have this idea that they are easy to come up with - after today I no longer believe that. Having had no screenplay writing experience this was a challenge. Park Hay and I tried to create a story that was interesting but not cliché, and after a lot of over-analyzation ended up confusing ourselves. Although the formula was simple, I had a hard time deciding on what information was useful to the outline of the whole film to what was an irrelevant detail. I think I focused to much on coming up with something different, rather than learning how to actual use the formula and the program to my advantage.

Tue, 13 Sep 2011 05:58:00 -0700 The Breakfast Club: "I'm a walrus" http://myposterous-yjlc.posterous.com/the-breakfast-club-im-a-walrus http://myposterous-yjlc.posterous.com/the-breakfast-club-im-a-walrus

Today's challenge shoot did not go as smoothly as I had hoped. When picking the scene I wanted to mimic, I didn't take into account the challenging light design that went into the set up of each shot. Having our scene done in a library was helpful considering that we were in school, but there were a lot of issues I didn't take into consideration. For one, the library did not have outlets on both sides of the room, which meant that we could only set up light from one side and have to use a white cardboard to bounce the light in the direction we wanted (this took up quite sometime). Another downside to our location was the amount of people in it. Part of mimicking the Breakfast Club scene included the background, which did not have random people in the background. I also was worried that they would become a distraction during the showing. Time was not wasted during the challenge, but I feel that I didn't allocate it so that we were working as efficiently as we could have. Except taking all this into account, the actors we easy to block and multiple takes were only needed for safety because their performances worked first go. We were unable to film the whole scene, but I think a lot of it will be saved in editing.

Tue, 13 Sep 2011 05:58:00 -0700 Let's Review: You Cheated! http://myposterous-yjlc.posterous.com/lets-review-you-cheated http://myposterous-yjlc.posterous.com/lets-review-you-cheated

After being given feedback on our challenge shoot, all I wanted to do was go back and do another one. I realized that even though we watched the full clip after we finished editing, it wasn't till we began to analyze as a class did I notice some issues we hadn't picked up on in the field. What bothered me the most was the difference in lighting between the over-the-shoulder (OTS)  shot of me in comparison to the one of Deziree. This unfortunate error disconnected and distracted me during the shot reverse shots. As well as lighting issues, we also noticed that we had broken the 180 degree rule. This did not seem to affect the audience while viewing are footage and I am still confused as to how we were able to get away with it. As a whole though, I thought we did fine.

Today was a great way to refresh my knowledge on the camera, filming, editing and the amount of preparation needed to be done before going out to start shooting. I feel that starting off IB film with a challenge shoot, allowed me to see where I was at. I think this will become clearer once the clips are reviewed but until then, I think we did fine.Over the course of today's class I thought I worked well with my group. Although we had an issue with the audio, I learned to use the voice-over function on Final Cut Pro, which I'm hoping will sync with the actual footage. Unfortunately due to the fact that this was done while the other groups were editing as well, there is a high chance that bits of their conversations will be heard during our scene. Overall though, these were minor setbacks, we had discussed location before class, actions and activities to keep the actors busy, and as a result our field work was done efficiently.
